The Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau was formed in Washington in 1915 and merged with the Handsplit Shake Bureau in 1963 to ensure quality standards of shakes and wooden shingles.

The CSSB allows manufacturers to use a Certi-Label designation. Members of the CSSB produce quality shingles that meet specified uniform standards and label their products with various Certi-label trademark designations.

Designations for shakes include Certi-Split Handsplit , Certi-Sawn TapersSawn, Certi-Split Tapersplit, and Certi-Split Straight-split. Designations for shingles include Certigrade Number1 Blue Label, Number 2 Red Label, and economy grades.

Certi-Label shakes and shingles offer the classic and elegant appearance of wood combined with durability and light weight.

The Certi-Label Warranty

The CSSB -administered 20 to 25 year warranty is offered by approved installer-members.

Certi-Label Shingle Review

Cost
Certi-Label Cedar shakes and shingles are less costly than copper, zinc, slate, or tile options, but are more expensive than traditional asphalt products.

Custom Bilt Shingles

Company Overview for Custom Bilt Shingles

Custom-Bilt Metals was founded in 1974 as a distributor to the gutter industry in southern California. In 1978, steel roofing was add to the product line and in 1990 expanded again to include aluminum shingles and shakes. In 2004, the company acquired VAIL Metal shingles and began the manufacture of a copper shingle.

Custom-Bilt Shingles Shingles Warranty

Custom-Bilt manufactures and sells a side variety of metal roofing, but the warranty information on some of the products is rather sketchy. Contacting the company directly seems to be the preferred method of Custom-Bilt, but there is some information readily available on the product warranty.

The aluminum Country Manor Shake and the Rustic shingle both carry lifetime forty year transferable warranties.

The Vail line includes the Vail Titan, which carries a lifetime warranty of undetermined length and the Vail Majestic Copper, which has no warranty information available.

All of the Standing Seam roofing panels carry a thirty-five year no fade warranty on the paint used, but no other information on warranty for this roofing is available.

Contacting the company at 1-800-826-7813 for specific information seems to be the route to take for detailed information on warranties.

Custom Bilt Shingles Review

Custom-bilt Metals primarily operates on the West Coast of the United States, although there is a presence in Louisiana as well. Residential roofing is offered, but the strength of the company seems to be in the commercial sector, as the Standing Seam roof panels make perfect sense for shopping malls, office buildings or any structure with a large amount of square footage. The metal shingles and steel roofing may be top of the line, but the lack of specific warranty information leaves something to be desired.

Cost: There is not enough information available for a good price comparison to other similar type roofs.

Rating: 7 out of 10

Installation: Handling sheets of metal in high wind can be very dangerous.

Rating: 6 out of 10

Paradigm Shingles

Paradigm Shingles Company Overview

Paradigm Shingles, Inc., a subsidiary of Vulcan Supply Corporation, was created to manufacture and distribute Bennington brand copper shingles. These beautiful metal shingles are made under license from Revere Copper Products, Inc. (the company founded by Paul Revere 200 years ago). Paradigm’s shingles are proudly “Made in USA” in their Vermont facility.

Paradigm Shingles Warranty

Paradigm’s solid copper Bennington shingles carry a 50-year Lifetime warranty. They won’t rot or mildew, split or curl, and have no applied to surface to peel off over time. They carry a Class-A Fire Rating. Realistically, only installation error might lead to shingle failure. Contact the company for complete coverage details.

Paradigm Shingles Installation

Paradigm’s Bennington brand shingles can be installed on any typical roof style, residential or commercial. They’re formed of solid, not plated, copper and weather over time to the familiar verdigris patina. Weighing only about 140 pounds per square foot, they can out-perform even high-end asphalt-based shingles at three times that weight. Their subdued design and texture blend perfectly with new construction or historic buildings in urban or rural settings. Paradigm makes or supplies all required trim and accessory copper fittings.

Paradigm Shingles Review:

Shingle Cost: Copper shingles from Paradigm compare favorably with top-line architectural asphalt shingles, and are substantially less expensive than classic materials like slate or clay tile. Installation costs are similar to standard shingles.

Rating: 8 out of 10.

Shingle Installation: Metal shingles can be easy to install, requiring only basic carpentry skills and tools. No special roof deck construction is needed. Copper roofs are walkable, or use staging for steeper pitches.

Rating: 9 out of 10.

Shingle Durability: Solid copper shingles are a lifetime investment requiring only minimal maintenance. They’ve been tested to withstand gale force winds and driving rain. Even damage from hail or fallen objects merely mars the surface; the familiar pale green patina re-forms to hide blemishes over time. Bennington brand roofing is suitable for a wide range of climate extremes.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Shingle Aesthetics: A roof shingled with Paradigm’s pure copper roofing presents a classic appeal, suitable for a broad range of architectural styles. Copper weathers over time to a muted hue that blends well with most classic colors. Since these are not a clad product, no color choices are offered.

Rating: 7 of 10

Shingle Warranty: Paradigm Shingles, Inc. provides a 50-year Lifetime warranty. Ease of installation helps avoid concerns about installer error. Copper shingle roofing systems should last as long as the building they protect.

Rating: 9 out of 10.

Paradigm’s pure copper roof shingles, produced under license from Revere Copper Products, Inc. offer a classic lifetime roof at a fraction of the cost and weight of other best-quality roofing systems. A weathered copper roof looks beautiful on everything from a backwoods cabin to a downtown courthouse. 100% recyclable, copper is an ultimate “green” roof, both literally and figuratively.
